Join Third Angle on the shores of Henry Hagg Lake for a newly composed soundwalk by Katherine Paul, who records and performs as Black Belt Eagle Scout. Beginning on May 31, patrons can enjoy the 45-minute sound walk at any time, using their own device and headphones while moving along a designated section of Hagg Lake Loop Trail (starting at the fishing pier and heading south toward Sain Creek).
To commemorate the launch of her prerecorded soundwalk, Black Belt Eagle Scout will perform a free concert at Sain Creek Recreation Area at 4:00PM on Saturday, May 31, 2025, featuring approximately 60 minutes of original songs. Audience members are encouraged to bring low folding chairs and blankets for outdoor seating.
“Hagg Lake holds a stillness that speaks in subtle ways,” says Katherine Paul. “The rustle of leaves, the ripple of water, the hush between bird calls– I wanted to wrap those sounds around my guitar like a thread through fabric, weaving a sonic offering to the land and the people who honor it." Artistic Director Sarah Tiedemann adds, “Hagg Lake is a lovely, accessible drive from Portland, and it receives nearly twice as many annual visitors as Crater Lake, yet it's off the radar for many people in our area. I grew up in western Washington County, and naturespaces like this are a foundational part of our love for Oregon's great outdoors. It's thrilling to welcome people to a place so dear to me and to enjoy music by the pristine blue water of the lake—especially music created by such a talented, genuine artist."
Katherine Paul is a Swinomish/Iñupiaq artist whose songs are deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest, drawing inspiration from her grunge predecessors in Seattle and the indigenous musical traditions of her ancestors. Her latest album The Land, The Water, The Sky recounts being “called by the land” in 2020 when she returned from Portland, OR to her home in Swinomish.
Soundwalks are site-specific compositions that encourage audience members to have a deeper experience with their environment. Since 2020 Third Angle has commissioned 12 soundwalks for the Portland Metropolitan Area, and this marks Third Angle’s first soundwalk in Washington County. This soundwalk and concert is made possible through a partnership with Washington County Parks and support from Explore Tualatin Valley.
